How to Get Ready for a Photoshoot
No matter who the photographer is, you’re never happy with your photos—professional or not. It feels like you never like the way you look in them. You’ve probably heard the term “Some people just aren’t photogenic,” and by now, you might even believe it.
I’ve been there. I used to avoid taking photos of myself because I didn’t like how I looked in them. But over time, I started to improve my appearance and build my confidence. Eventually, it didn’t matter who was behind the camera or how the photos were taken—I liked the way I looked in all of them.
I want to share some of the most valuable insights I’ve gained—both from personal experience and from working with clients—to help you look and feel your best in photos.
Mindset Matters
No matter how much you change externally, if you’re stressed or overwhelmed, it will show in your photos. My suggestion? Leave your problems, difficult situations, and worries aside. Set the mindset that this photoshoot is for you—it’s your moment to shine. Focus your positive energy on it, especially if your life or work depends on the outcome.
I also recommend adopting a low-carb, unprocessed diet 10 to 15 days before the shoot. The benefits are worth it—your skin and overall appearance will noticeably improve.
Define Your Personality
Choose outfits that reflect your personality and style. Are you going for a Girlfriend Experience? Night-out vibes? Or perhaps fantasy themes, uniforms, or lingerie? It’s crucial to plan this in advance since your wardrobe will represent your image when clients see your photos.
Find references of photos you like, whether from websites where you advertise, Instagram, or Pinterest. Save them and create a board. Having clear examples will help you and your photographer achieve the look you want.
Experiment and Practice with Your Outfits
I’ve had so many clients show up to the studio only to realize their outfits didn’t fit or something important was missing. Don’t let this happen to you. Try on your outfits beforehand, experiment with them, and see what makes you feel most comfortable. Always bring more than enough options for the day.
The Day Before the Shoot
Personal Care: Trim your hair and eyebrows if needed and wax at least a day or two before the shoot. Removing small hairs can be challenging and, if not done properly, will affect the quality of your skin retouching in the photos.
Outfits: Double-check your selections to make sure nothing is broken or incomplete. Bring extra outfits and accessories—we might get creative and create something unique.
Hydration and Diet: Drink plenty of water, and if you have any food sensitivities, avoid triggering foods at least a week before. You want your skin to glow on the day of the shoot.
Hair and Makeup: Whether or not you’re showing your face in the photos, styled hair is a must. If your face isn’t visible, your hair becomes the centrepiece of the image, so make it look stunning. If possible, hire a professional for the best results.
Relax and Enjoy the Process
Nothing is worse than feeling anxious or stressed before a shoot—it will show in your photos. As I mentioned earlier, your feelings will be reflected in the images. I’ll do everything I can to make you feel comfortable, but ultimately, you are the one posing. So take a deep breath, trust the process, and enjoy the experience!
Preparing for a photoshoot might seem like a lot of work, but every step is worth it to capture stunning, professional-quality images that truly represent you. Whether it’s choosing outfits that make you feel amazing, ensuring your skin glows with good care, or relaxing to let your natural confidence shine through—these details come together to create results you’ll love.
Remember, the key to a great photoshoot isn’t about being “photogenic”; it’s about preparation, mindset, and feeling your best. With these tips in mind, you’re well on your way to capturing photos that showcase your unique personality and style.
And if all this feels a bit overwhelming, don’t worry—that’s what I’m here for! Whether you need one-on-one guidance or a professional touch to bring your vision to life, I’m here to help. Let’s work together to create something truly memorable.
